Specialist services

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy helps to restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability. It can also help reduce your risk of injury or illness in the future. Physiotherapists take a holistic approach, involving the patient directly in their own care.

We are a team of expert physiotherapists with each of us having over 10 years minimum clinical experience, specialising in Musculoskeletal and orthopaedic conditions, pre and post surgery, sports injuries and rheumatological conditions.

Our Initial Assessments are usually an hour long so we can spend time getting to know you and fully assess your needs, to be able to get a comprehensive treatment plan in place to aid your recovery. Follow up appointments if required are generally 45 minutes long, where we can carry out manual hands on therapy, massage, ultrasound and taping.

Pilates

At The Dorchester Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic we follow the APPI (Australian Physiotherapy & Pilates Institute) syllabus, with APPI now firmly established as a world leader in Pilates training. Our Physiotherapists that teach Pilates are all qualified APPI Pilates Instructors and have completed all necessary qualifications as well as attending regular professional development courses to keep their knowledge base up to date. We use Pilates as a positive adjunct to Physiotherapy rehabilitation in both improving the quality of movement, posture and core strength for many and at a higher level through specific training for return to sports and training.

We feel strongly about the importance of the exercises being taught correctly and giving people individual attention and instructions. This led to us to running our own Pilates classes with a maximum of 6 participants in each class to ensure that we as therapists and instructors are able to provide individual instruction to maximise the benefit for each individual. We also provide Pilates on a 1:1 or 1:2 basis. As Physiotherapists, the benefits of Pilates have found us using the exercises in our treatments as well as recommending them as a longer-term form of exercise to manage long term conditions or maintain wellness and normal pain-free movement.

Acupuncture

The Dorchester Physiotherapy and Sports Injury Clinic are able to offer acupuncture as an adjunct to Physiotherapy. Our Physiotherapists have been practicing acupuncture for the relief of pain for over 15 years and are members of the AACP (Acupuncture Association of Chartered Physiotherapists).

Acupuncture can be used alongside physiotherapy modalities to treat pain and a wide range of health problems. In addition to a variety of musculoskeletal pain ie back, neck, shoulder, knee etc, we are also able to treat tension type headaches. The benefits of acupuncture for tension headaches were recognised by NICE in 2012. Acupuncture can also be used when conventional treatments may not have been effective.

Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain and stress relieving chemicals. It can also improve sleep by causing the release of melatonin and increase relaxation with the release of serotonin. In addition, acupuncture stimulates nerve fibres to block pain which can reduce the sensitivity of tender areas of the body.
